How to write a better check-in note

I’m a multi-tasker, which, based on recent studies I’ve read, is actually not a thing to be proud of. In the morning, after gratitudes and priorities, I will often catch up on my video chats, texts and messages from mentors, visionaries and APs around town that I connect with daily. And, of course, coach.

A couple days ago, while taming the beast that is my hair, I got a Marco Polo from a local agent who has finally resigned to the note writing suggested in the book.

“What do I write about?” she asked.

“Give something away,” I replied.

“What the hell does that mean?” she responded.

“It means, give a compliment, a thank you, a hello, a comfort, an admiration. Whatever makes sense,” I said.

“Fine, I’ll try it.”

That was about six weeks ago.

Yesterday, I watched a video of the same agent with vibrant eyes, thrilled that she got a call from the recipient of one of her notes who:

a)     Thanked her for even thinking of him.
b)    In return, he would like to give her a shot at a listing.

Now the note card thing isn’t original. But what you put in it is.

Here are a couple tips when you’re deciding what to write:

  1. Make it about them -> Use FORD to engage them. Go on Facebook and see if anything is happening with their family, occupation, recreation (did they take a trip?) or if they shared a dream.

  2. Be vulnerable -> connection takes two. Giving a piece of what is happening with you, or how you feel or relate about something that is happening in their life, will go a long way.

  3. Don’t mention business -> this note is a check in. It shows you care and are a part of their lives. It keeps you top of mind and gives a sense of the person you are.

  4. Include everybody -> lenders who do a good job, CPAs that stepped up, home inspectors that save your bacon, and, of course, your database.

When you do this consistently, it all starts to click. It happened for me. It is happening for others.

Are you writing 10 thank you cards a week? Have you adjusted the idea to make it your own? I’d love to hear about it. Leave me a comment below. More about cards and other things to do consistently to generate leads are outlined in the book.

Until then, chin up, keep your feet moving … and burn the white flag.
