Don’t Be Walter White

If you’ve been stuck under a rock, Walter White is a character from Breaking Bad – one of the most awarded TV shows in history. If you’re not a Netflix junkie, let’s get you caught up. Walter White was a cash poor high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with cancer, turned Meth Cook to try and make extra money to leave his family after death, turned low-level egotistical drug dealer, turned weird-hat-wearing Mega Drug Lord who nicknamed himself, “Heisenberg”.

Our first lesson from Walter is, you cannot give yourself your own nickname.

The second is, in his quest to make loads of money to protect his family after his passing of cancer, he finds he’s actually pretty darn good at cooking meth. (I supposed we’re all put on the earth with a gift).

As he gains recognition, his ego takes over and we watch sweet o’ Walter disappear and this obtuse “best-cook-in-the-southwest” persona override every single relationship he cares about and the whole reason he started this journey in the first place.

You are going to experience some amazing successes in real estate. If you’re lucky, you’re going to see some pay checks that some folks will only dream of. I beg you, don’t lose sight of why you’re in this business in the first place.

Exercise:

1.     Practice gratitude on the regular.

2.     Acknowledge the people that have helped you along the way.

3.     Pay it forward. Help someone else.

We are all here to help families realize their dreams, gain financial security, and if we really do our job well, make decisions that help them leave a family legacy. Stay grounded friends. With success and a goal-focused mindset, it can be easy to lose yourself.

Are there activities that you keep that help remind you of your “why” in this business? Leave a comment below, I’d love to hear it.

Until then, chin up, keep your feet moving … and burn the white flag.
