Value

I recently had an exchange with a woman I respect so much. I think her abilities in her field are just short of remarkable. She just has a gift I would be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in my opinion. I’ve felt so fortunate to have her in my life that I’ve wondered how I’ve been able to put my socks on without her.

When we first formed a team together, I told her, “invoice me your hours, whatever the rate is at the end of each month.”

When the first month came, and she finally sent me the invoice, I looked at it and said,

“No. Absolutely not.”

It wasn’t that she sent me some outrageous figure that I couldn’t afford. Instead, I read a number that didn’t even reach the bottom of the range I thought she was worth.

Pro tip: know your value and stick with it!!

Discount brokerages are all the rage right now. Just down the street a sign hangs in front of a house that charges the seller 1% commission and the agent is on an hourly wage. Let me just say, that seller is getting what they pay for. Stuck on the market. They’ve dropped their price twice. Who knows if that agent even bothers to answer their phone. After all, they will get paid the same no matter what right?

What you bring to the table is remarkable. Even if you lack some experience, you will make up for it ten-fold in your drive, resourcefulness and determination to get the best for your client. You will properly assess the home’s value, get professional photos taken of the home, and the marketing of that house will be spot on! When you are at a listing appointment with a seller that wants to nickel and dime your commission and can’t see the value of what you bring to the transaction, hit the road Jack. They are not supposed to be your client. You’re not a dollar store agent. Know that and live it.

Quality and value are directly related. Work on the quality of your client’s experience. They will see your value. Thus, you will be rightly compensated.  This equation never has longevity working in reverse.

Don’t undervalue yourself. Experience isn’t everything. Preparation is.

I’d love to hear your comments.

Until then, keep your feet moving, chin up … and burn the white flag.
