Building Real Estate Culture

The second day after I passed the real estate exam, I remember thinking about how hard it was to source actual information on what to do next. Not one Google search provided me the sense of what I should be doing. One of the best things I found at that time was to situate myself next to folks that already knew what building blocks I needed to build a great business.

You might even say that, while you’re in this newly minted state, this is probably the best time to decide what kind of culture your business will have.

So what makes up the culture of a business you might ask. I think it’s three things.

1)    Values

2)    Best Practices

3)    Behaviors

It would make sense that at the moment, you have absolutely no idea what your company stands for, your best practices, or have developed behaviors in certain circumstances. Your goal should be, that by the end of your first year in real estate, you’ll know the answer to all three of these.

Exercise:

1)    This week, schedule 5 face to face meetings with 5 different seasoned agents that currently have a team with little staff turnover.

2)    Ask them about the above 3 things that make up a good business culture and how they achieved them.

3)    If you hear anything that resonates with you and your business goals, write them down and implement parts or all of it over the next month.

We can agree, it’s a waste of time and energy to try and re-invent the wheel. You’ll learn more and go further by sampling sourcing information and tactics with proven results in your market. Your time and energy is better served on lead generation and follow up, not company structure and culture.

I’d love to hear how your meetings went, how you felt and what you learnt from the seasoned real estate agents around you. Leave me a comment below.

Until then, chin up, keep your feet moving … and burn the white flag.
