A Less Lonely Road – The Mentor

Here’s the truth. I have probably had about 20 mentors so far in my life. All 20 have molded me into something different, or challenged me, or showed me by example the possibilities. They represent growth.

In fact, you could look at them as the person who is standing in the spot you’re headed. They represent all the magnificent colors of the sunset you wish you could create.

A mentor is essential in helping garner focus on your business plan. So let’s get into it!

Position #1 – The Coach (if you missed last week’s post, please read the Coach first.)

Position #2 – The Mentor

Characteristics:

  • Must be a realtor

  • Have a similar value system

  • A forward-thinker

  • Objective

  • Able to keep confidentiality

  • Able to provide honest feedback

  • A sounding board for your plans

  • Sharer of their own knowledge and systems

  • Generous

  • Must be daily doing real estate activities to grow their craft in this changing environment  (ie. can’t be retired)

Exercise:

1.     Make a list of everyone in your life that holds the above attributes.

2.     Reduce the list to 3 names that fit the best.

3.     By the end of this week, set up a face-to-face meeting with all three

4.     Discuss with them your goals and see if their advice on how to get there is in line with your value system.

5.     Choose a Mentor and stay connected with them throughout this year.

Next week, we will talk about the visionary. So, do this week’s work so we can get on with the next position next week. I’d love to hear how your meetings went. Did you find someone inspiring? Let’s hear about it. Leave me a comment below.

Until then, chin up, keep your feet moving … and burn the white flag.
