A Less Lonely Road – The Accountability Partner
On some days, having the will power and work ethic to move a mountain feels totally impossible. For most, we get a lot more done when someone is consistently knocking on our preverbal door to say, “Excuse me, but did you do that thing you said you need to do?”.
If you think about it, it’s possible you’ve been trained to respond to an accountability partner at an early age. I’d wager there are quite a few of us that sat at the kitchen table in a grump while a parent (or guardian) told us we weren’t leaving until the math homework was done.
All you’re doing with this position is finding someone to just ask you what you did. They don’t have to be the best at anything. Just good at follow up.
Position #1 – The Coach (if you missed the first post on positions, read the Coach first)
Position #2 – The Mentor (don’t cheat, read the Mentor post first)
Position #3 – The Visionary (I’m serious, don’t cheat)
Position #4 – The Accountability Partner
Characteristics:
Actively in the trenches with you
A full-time agent
Facing the same hurdles
Driven in nature
Willing to take risks
Pushing their own comfort level
Has a growth mindset
Someone you can interact with daily
Goal Oriented
Bonus – has a personality type different from your own
Exercise:
1. Make a list of everyone in your life that holds the above attributes.
2. Once a week meet with one of them face to face.
3. Choose an Accountability Partner and set up specific goals. Then discuss ways in which you can achieve it, actions that can be measured, and a date of when you will achieve them. I would also suggest making a consequence that exposes you both equally if you don’t meet your objectives.
I can’t wait to hear about how hiring to these four positions propels your business. Leave me a comment below on what you were able to achieve (or not) with this exercise.
Until then, chin up, keep your feet moving … and burn the white flag.
