Stop Doing This on a Date. Or in Real Estate.

Recently, I was casually chatting with a friend about her love life and we coasted onto the topic of “worst dates.” While it feels like a millennium since I’ve been on one, I do recall the worst. It wasn’t terrible because it was a blind date or that we didn’t really jive in the chemistry department. It was because all he did was talk about himself.

All night was about how he was the best at everything. The best cyclist. The best at basketball. The best at math. He took “humble brag” to new heights. “Look fella, you’re no Jon Snow okay? Slow down a little.” By the end, we were so disconnected my eye rolls were audible.

Now, if he had shown up with a wingman, and his best buddy was singing me a chorus about how incredible my jack-of-all-traits date was, I likely would have been more receptive to getting to know him better.  Which brings me to today’s real estate observation.

What other people say about you holds more weight and merit than anything you say about yourself. This is why getting client reviews about your service as a real estate agent is so important.

A lot of home buyers and sellers will research your reputation first before they agree to work with you. Glowing reviews begin to build a bridge of trust without you even being in the room.

Exercise:

  1. If you’ve been able to get a deal done so far, make sure you’ve requested a review from the buyer or seller.

  2. If you have not been able to close a deal so far, start preparing for how you will achieve the bridge of trust when someone looks you up online. E.g. Maybe your social media account will be pasted with folks who are currently working with you and obviously love what you’re doing. Be creative. Honest and creative.

  3. Try to take a third person view of what your persona is online. Does it match what people should know about you?

Take charge of the perception folks should have about you on the interwebs world so the truth about you is out there. I’d love to hear from you. Did anyone write you a review that knocked your socks off? Can you think of a way to leverage it into future business? Leave me a comment below.

Until then, chin up, keep your feet moving … and burn the white flag.
